In-Law Additions Go “Modular” The statistics are eye-opening. According to a 2004 study conducted by the AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving, an estimated 34 million Americans are caring for someone age 50 or older and of that number, some 9 million live with the person they’re watching over. It comes as no surprise therefore that many families are turning to “in-law” apartment additions to accommodate a once-again growing family. Less costly than long-term assisted living or nursing facilities, in-law suites can fill the living-quarters needs for those seniors who no longer feel comfortable living alone, but do not require a medically staffed facility. And today, modular additions are recognized as an attractive and expedient alternative to standard “stick built” in-law additions. Time may truly be of the essence for those in the market for an in-law suite and it is not always on our side as many “baby boomers” find themselves having to make a quick decision about where mom and/or dad will live following a hospital or rehabilitation center stay. While a “stick built” addition can take months to complete, a factory-constructed addition is assembled on site and made weather tight in a day or two. Modular in-law additions can either be used as an addition to modular construction or to “stick built” residences. Built in a controlled environment, they are precision engineered for durability, making them less costly to maintain. Designed to provide privacy and independence with the advantage of being “only a doorway” away from family, modular additions can be custom designed and conform to handicapped accessibility codes. As more families find themselves with an increased number living under the same roof, the need for swift, high-quality additions will become greater than ever. “Going modular” can help reduce some of the stresses of transitioning from a two generation to a three generation household.
